Description: Steward Media founder, Derek Dickow’s speech on overcoming obstacles and living your dreams was an inspiration to all students who attended Oakland University’s Chaldean American Student Association meeting.

Lauren Kallabat, CASA’s current president introduced him before he gave his speech, and he then began his talk while engaging and interacting with the audience.  He shared his college experience, and how his outlook and perspective helped him to get where he is today.  Lastly, he opened the floor to a question-and-answer period at the end.

“With Derek as the founder of CASA at Oakland University, it is always a pleasure to welcome him and hear his inspirational guidance on how to feel more confident in succeeding. All of the students, including myself, need to take advantage of these moments in an increased effort to just listen, understand, and apply the concepts that Derek spoke about in our meeting,” says Angelo Allos, of CASA’s executive board and recent O.U. graduate.

“It is an honor to receive information and wisdom from adults who have been in our position before, just as Derek has year in and year out during my tenure at Oakland,” he adds.

“It’s so much easier to dwell on what we feel is stopping us from achieving our dreams, when in actuality there really is nothing stopping us from achieving them but ourselves. As Derek pointed out in what was the ‘Aha!’ moment of the session, it’s all about perspective. If we change the way we think, we change the way we live. And the mentality that nothing is impossible is the mentality that makes dreams possible and changes the world,” says Kallabat, a junior majoring in business.
